April 22, 2017

The ladies of Advent Lutheran Church in Melbourne hosted the Spring Gathering this year with forty-three registered attendees, Pr. Funk of Advent, Pr. Unrath (Dean of the Space Coast Conference churches), Kathy Hoefer (representative of the SWO) and Lori Jahn who was the organist for the worship service and later a special guest appearing at Katie Luther.  The total number was 47, representing 7 churches in our conference.  Registration and coffee fellowship was held from 9:00 to 10:00 with refreshments provided by the ladies of Advent Lutheran Church. Peggy Graefe, President Spacecoast Conference and Carol Wilson, Co-President of Advent LC Women, greeted and welcomed all. Our theme for the gathering was “Feed my sheep.”

Pastor Rick Funk and Pr. Tom Unrath led the worship and communion service.  Pastor Funk spoke on the Easter message, the resurrection of Jesus and Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene.  Mary did not recognize Jesus at first.  She then told others of seeing him, back from the dead; the most extraordinary news ever.  She couldn’t wait to tell others, there would be no stopping her from spreading the good news.  This was in opposition to what the disciples were doing.  Jesus appeared to the disciples twice and still it was 40 days before they began spreading the good news.  It is important that in our faithful service, we be active, speak up, be persistent, we are to share the good news everywhere we go, wherever we go and whenever we go.  Christ has risen.

Peggy Graefe, the President of Spacecoast Conference opened the business meeting.  Roll Call of the churches was taken.  Minutes from the Spring 2016 gathering and Minutes from the meeting at Lake Yale in the fall were unanimously approved.  Nominations are open for Secretary.  Upon reflection we will proceed with election of a new secretary after lunch.

Kathy Hoefer,  SWO Board Member, read a message from SWO President, Phyllis Wade.

Kathy had hand out packages for each congregational unit with information from SWO.    Lake Yale Fall Gathering will be November 10-12, 2017.  There are youth scholarships, “Let Your Light Shine,” available, as well as “Share The Spirit” Scholarships for those needing financial assistance to attend the Lake Yale Gathering.  Youth falls into the age bracket of 12 to 18 years old.  Registration starts late July or early August.  Pastor Joanie Holden will again be the worship leader.  This year is a celebration year for the 500th year of the protestant reformation.  Kathy introduced Elaine Heine, the webmaster for the Florida Bahamas website who reminded us of the varied information on this website; i.e. constitution updates, publications and resources available online.  The Florida Bahamas WELCA website is  Kathy welcomed three first time attendees.

Sandra Penrod reported on LWR.  Eleven churches participated, collecting 200 boxes of quilts, fabric kits, school kits, as well as 3211 lbs of soap.  Well done!

Diane Spicer, spokesperson for the WELCA Triennial to be held July 15-17, 2017 in Minneapolis, MN, updated us and encouraged all to attend.  This is a fun filled spiritual opportunity with our sisters in Christ from across the country.

Pres. Peggy Graefe continued the meeting.  Our conference assignment for the Lake Yale Fall Gathering will be to provide early morning devotions on Saturday and Sunday.  Volunteers are needed for devotions, please contact Peggy if you can help (telephone #321-242-9776 or email  We are teamed with Broward Bahamas conference for the Saturday  evening reformation fair, which is part of the 500th year celebration of the protestant reformation.  We will co-anchor a booth at the celebration.  Our booth will hand out sachets.  Help is needed to make these.  More details to come.

A Love Offering was collected in the amount of $251.00.  One half of the Love Offering will go to the FL Bahamas SWO and one half to Golden Rainbow Ranch, the 2017-2018 FL-Bahamas WELCA designated Love Offering recipient.  The Golden Rainbow Ranch is located in a 10-acre sanctuary in Brooksville, Florida.  There was a handout provided to all attendees with more detail on how this ministry provides services to families.

Our special guest, Katie Luther, spent a few minutes with us sharing some of her life history and the ministry she shared with Martin Luther.  She was a delightful guest.  Thank you Lori Jahn for your characterization of Katie Luther (great costume, she really did look the part).

We broke for a delicious lunch provided by the ladies of Advent.

Pastor Lynn Ash lead us in Bible study with the theme: Feed my Sheep, John 21:17.  Jesus said to Simon Peter a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”  Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?  And he said to him. “Lord you know everything; you know that I love you.”  Jesus said to him “Feed my sheep.”  Peter was to become the shepherd to Jesus’ sheep, to love them, to tend to their physical and spiritual needs.  We are to do as well, to love and to serve.

Concordia church in Barefoot Bay has graciously volunteered to host the Spacecoast Fall Gathering.  Yeah!  Thank you Concordia ladies for stepping forward to open your church to us.

We are also pleased to have Joy Lutheran Church, Palm Bay, volunteer to host the Spring Gathering in 2018.  Thank you Joy ladies!

Nominations were asked for the position of Secretary.  Linda Kratzer of Joy Lutheran in Palm Bay volunteered.  Thank you Linda, we are so appreciative of your willingness to serve our Spacecoast Conference.

Kathy Hoefer, SWO Board representative, thanked all our officers for their service; she then installed our new secretary, Linda Kratzer.

A very special thank you to the ladies of Advent Lutheran Church for handling registrations, morning refreshments, hosting the gathering and providing lunch.  It was a wonderful day and we are so appreciative of all you did to make it so.
