Lutheran World Relief

The Mission Statement for Lutheran World Relief is, “Affirming God’s love for all people, we work with Lutherans and partners around the world to end poverty, injustice and human suffering.”  Once again, the women within our synod have risen to the occasion with their generosity of quilts and kits for LWR.  You contributed 35,802 pounds this year , which is a significant increase from 29,099 pounds in 2011.  This includes 7,240 quilts; for a breakdown of each of the kits, please look at the spread sheet with a breakdown of churches that contributed within each conference.

I want to thank you for your patience in working with me this year.  It was challenging with each of the changes in the kits but we did it!  In 2012, all kits collected contain the items as noted in the guidelines in the LWR Quilt & Kit Ministry Guide 2011.  You can request your copy of the all-new Quilt & Kit Ministry Guide by calling 800.597.5972 or by logging on to lwr.org/beinvolved. The pattern and directions for the new drawstring backpack for School Kits is posted below as well as sources for ready-made backpacks. The new terminology must be used for the Kits as this indicates that they contain the contents as noted in the 2011 Guide; Kits include Baby Care Kits, Fabric Kits, Personal Care Kits, and School Kits. Keep these in mind for 2013.

Thelma Isaksen will be the LWR Coordinator from the Florida-Bahamas Synodical Board beginning immediately.  Her e-mail is encktf@gmail.com  Information for the Ingathering 2013 will continue to be posted here on the Florida-Bahamas Synodical Women’s Organizational Website.  ONLY the new kits (from the changes that were made in 2011) will be accepted.

At the request of Lutheran World Relief (LWR), the churchwide executive board of the Women of the ELCA endorsed the LWR 2013 Quilt Campaign. In 2013, LWR will challenge Lutherans to reach an unprecedented milestone in the LWR Quilt & Kit Ministry—creating 500,000 LWR Mission Quilts. The goal represents a 25% increase in the average number of quilts created for LWR in any given year. “It’s ambitious, but attainable with the partnership and support of Women of the ELCA,” says a LWR spokeswoman. Further details, including special events and resources, will be announced in the fall.

Thank you again for your participation in this ministry.  Through your contributions to LWR, you extend the hand of Christian love to people overcoming poverty and injustice in 50 countries.

Diane Spicer, LWR Coordinator 2010-February 2012
